Ludovic Delmas

Bonjour! I’m the co-founder of Kickass UX! I’m originally from France, and I currently live in Seattle. My goal is to empower graphic designers to love their careers.

What motivates you to mentor creatives?

To empower creatives to do what they love without having to sacrifice *anything*.

They shouldn’t have to choose between being creative or being paid fairly. They shouldn’t have to choose between being creative or being treated respectfully.

What motivates me is to give them the knowledge to be creative, respected, and paid generously.

Creatives are changemakers; without them, the world wouldn’t be as vibrant and exciting. More people need to recognize their importance. They bring a lot to the table.

Nothing pisses me off more than people who don’t respect them. People who don’t pay fairly. People who diminish their work. “Make the logo bigger,” “It’s not worth the money you’re asking for,” etc.

It’s time to flip the script. Power to creatives!

What’s your current role and origin story as a creative?

What creative work(s) are you the proudest of?

A few years ago, I was at the Louvre in Paris and saw a painting by Giuseppe Arcimboldo called “Summer.” I knew that I had to reproduce it.

It’s not easy; there are so many details to account for. It took me many hours to do about half of it, and I hope to finish it someday!

Even though most of my time is spent working digitally, to this day, it’s the piece of work I’m most proud of.

What’s your current “creative studio”/desk setup like?

I usually start my mornings in the living room and move to my desk in the afternoon. This is because I like to change environments during the day. Otherwise, I tend to get restless.

I also move around a lot when I work; it helps me to be more strategic and intentional. So that’s why having a standing desk is a must for me. I absolutely love it!

Another thing that I can’t live without in my studio is my couch. In between work sessions, I like to relax. I find that taking breaks keeps my creative juices flowing.

I've had the pleasure to be featured on Matt Barrios' podcast where you can learn more about my take on homelife:

Where do you go to get inspired?

I go to coffee shops a lot. Something about the background noise, the people, and the environment helps me to think creatively.

I can’t just stay at home all the time and see the same four walls. So stepping out of my home studio is sometimes what I need to keep moving forward.

Depending on the day’s mood, there are a few coffee shops that I like to go to.

The most important thing for me is to keep things flexible, and to change my environment from time to time so that I stay alert and creative.

Do you have a ritual, or time of day that unleashes your creative powers?

The more distracted I am, the more my creativity takes a nosedive. Multitasking drains my energy, so I do everything possible to create an environment that works well for me.

My top daily ritual is to keep my phone out of reach the entire morning. At least until lunchtime or 2PM.

It helps me stay in the zone. Otherwise, it’s easy to mindlessly grab my phone and watch a bunch of YouTube videos.

Being very intentional with technology is my secret sauce to staying in the flow.

What’s an album that changed your life?

When I was a kid, the album that changed my life was Homework by Daft Punk.

Even though it’s not their most technically impressive album, it’s the one that opened a new musical horizontal for me. It was so different compared to everything else.

I’ve been a Daft Punk fan from day one. I rarely spend a month without listening to at least one of their albums.

Lately, I love to listen to FKJ (French Kiwi Juice), Mad Rey, and Sofiane Pamart!
